What is Content & Why do we Care?

First things first, what is content?

“Text matter of a document or publication in any form. Content is both information and communication; the sum total of the freshness, readability, relevancy, and usefulness of the information presented, and the manner in which it is presented.”

Examples of content include;

  • Blogs

  • Interviews

  • Case Studies

  • Reviews

  • Infographs

  • White papers

  • Curating (re-using other peoples content)

Now that we know what content is…We need to understand how best to make it, where to use it and why we should care.

How to make great content

In most instances, if you talk to someone about content creation they will be referring to blogs.Why?Blogs are a great way to present and share an idea & knowledge.They boost your SEO (Search Engine Optimization), helping you be found by more web users looking for someone just like you…And, to be clear, YES!Your blogs can include interviews, case studies, reviews, infographs, and even white papers.

So, how do you create great content?First and foremost, it should be original – not necessarily an original thought, but original words written by you.

Original content goes a long way with Google, and that is a good thing if you want to be found.

Great content has something – it has a voice.It guides users through your central concept and delivers knowledge they need, want, and value.If you are just getting started in creating content, you likely will not have found your voice yet, don’t worry it will come.

A trick I like to tell people who are just getting started is to ‘assign’ themselves a content topic, then hit voice record on their smart phone while they talk about the content topic.Once done, play it back and transcribe.

Where to use content

As we touched on above, your website is best place for you to put your content.

Be sure to use great images as part of your posts, and include optimum key words in your blog descriptions when posting to your site.

Each time you create a new blog post, you are essentially creating a new page on your site that is being indexed by Google – they are marketing it for you…For free & forever.Key words help Google to help you reach the people who care about your content most.

But wait, there’s more!

Once you have your blog & you’ve posted it to your website, you need to share it with the world.This is where you are going to post your blog link through your social channels, sharing your content with the world and driving traffic back to your website.

Why we care about content

If you have read to this point, you should already have a good idea why content is good, nay, why content is great!

To go over the main points, we care about content because;

  • Content has significant impact on SEO and search engine ranking. Naturally place key words within your content piece and on your web site backend helps your website organically rank higher for relevant key words and search terms.

  • Content helps users engage with you & your brand via comment enablement on your website, or through social media posts.

  • Content positions you as a knowledge leader in your farm area, and helps to differentiate you from your competitors.

  • Good content lets potential clients get to know you and exposes you to them. As most home buyers and sellers are doing research online to find their ideal agent, content will put you in front of them and give them a better ide of who you are, what you know and how you can help them.

  • Content adds value. Not only to your brand but to your digital user experience.

At the end of the day, content is king.If you are not creating relevant, consumable content that provides value to potential clients, you are losing out.Referrals will only get you so far.
